Start A Blog

A lot of people have messaged me recently asking how they can start their own fitness blog. so I thought I’d write up a quick post on how I did it!  A few years ago I didn’t even know what blogging was and now it’s a  huge part of my life.  I have found that blogging has helped me TREMENDOUSLY in my fitness adventure because it holds me accountable and I LOVE the support I get from my readers :).

I’ve suggested to several people that they should start their own blog to share their own recipes, fitness tips & their personal journey.  I honestly think it’s a great idea!

I have a degree in computers so this stuff comes naturally to me. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below!

I’ve simplified the process of starting your own blog into 3 simple steps.

  1. Domain Name and Hosting
  2. Installing WordPress
  3. Have Fun and Design Your Blog!

1.)  Domain Name and Hosting

This part is fun! What do you want your domain name to be?  Mine is LiveLifeActive.com.  Pick something that will be easy to remember and as catchy as possible.  Head over to BlueHost to see if your new domain name is available.

After you choose your domain name, you’ll need to host your website.  Hosting is where all the information that you write on your blog is stored. You have to pay for the storage space of your website.  It’s kind of like renting a parking space each month.

Bluehost is a very reliable website and has great prices.  They will even give you your domain name for FREE if you buy hosting through them (I highly recommend BlueHost).

You can host your domain for free on wordpress.com, however you will have the words “wordpress” in your website name.  For example, my free blog name would have been www.livelifeactive.wordpress.com which isn’t as attractive in my opinion (and much harder for readers to remember).

Here is a screenshot of how you can get your hosting for only $4.95 a month!  That’s a great deal to us nerdy I.T. folks ;)

2. Installing WordPress

After you’ve registered with BlueHost, you can now install WordPress.  WordPress is a very easy to understand blogging software.  You’ll install wordpress so that you can make easy blog posts and not worry about knowing HTML coding or being a big geek like me :)

It’s easy to use and SIMPLE to install as well.

Log into your new BlueHost account and go to your Software/Services section.  You’ll see a Word Press icon.  Click it and you’re almost done!

On the next page, click “Install a brand new version.”

The next page will show 3 steps.

Step 1: Installation Preferences - When it asks you “Where would you like Word Press installed?”  Leave the box blank.

Step 2: Advanced Options – You don’t need to touch this section.

Step 3: Legal Information - Check the check box.

Click COMPLETE!

If you get a warning at this point, select “Overwrite existing files”.

When you get a note saying “Installation Complete”, make a note of your Login URL, username and password and save it to a safe place.

Now, open up Internet Explorer and type in your Login URL that you just received.

Log in with the username and password you just received!!!  You now have a hosted blog and can start creating your blog for the world to see :)   YIPEE!!!!!

3.)  Have Fun and Design Your Blog!

You are now minutes away from creating your first blog post!  How exciting, right?!?!

Now is the time where you can pick how you want your blog to look.  You get to pick your theme!

There are a TON of free wordpress themes available.

If you want to have more customization options and have a more professional look than those that are offered for free, I’d highly recommend using a premium theme.

The Thesis Theme is one that I would suggest.  It is highly functional and customizable.  It’s super easy to use!

If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or email me directly at erinstaysfit@gmail.com.  I’d be glad to help you on your own blogging adventure :)

Now is your chance to create a fitness, food or personal blog that will inspire others and hold you accountable for your goals!
